Burger Challenge at The Winston – Hobart, Tasmania

I’ll say it up front. I blame the beer!!

It was a Friday afternoon, work was done for the week, and Clown #2 casually suggested, “You want to try the Winston?”

“Giddy Up!!”, was my response!

And so it was that these two clowns found themselves chowing down at the eclectic little pub on the corner of Elizabeth and Federal streets known as The Winston!

Until I began this burger challenge I had never heard of The Winston (I’m sure it was called something else until only recently…Alley Cat maybe??), but the recommendations were coming in so thick and fast that they couldn’t be ignored!

Advertising themselves as being, “…home to great Australian and American food and beer…” I was intrigued as to what this actually meant but, as always, a little skeptical!

Let me tell you, this place delivered big time!!

Mac and cheese, buffalo wings with blue cheese sauce, hot dogs, beer battered onion rings, mushroom tacos(?!)…and then there are the occasional specials they like to throw into the mix such as Baltimore crab cakes, maple glazed donuts with bacon and, get this, a “700g Mother F!@#king Man Steak” (their words, not mine 🙂 )!!!

We were feeling peckish, so we tried their buffalo wings and onion rings first up. Good tangy sauce on the wings, perhaps a little bit mild for my liking, but not bad at all. The blue cheese sauce was a bit ‘take it or leave it’ for me, but Karen couldn’t get enough of it! The life preservers onion rings were absolutely epic!! Check out the size of these suckers! Really crunchy exterior, and so tender in the middle. Mmmm…

Buffalo wings and onion rings

And of course, that brings us to their burgers.

In the interests of a fair comparison, I went with the cheeseburger, comprising a beef patty, American cheese, pickles, diced onion and special sauce, with a side serve of fries. They had a few other varieties, but I forgot to take a photo of the menu…duh…

The photos really don’t do this burger justice. As I said, I blame the beer. Bloody good beer in fact! They had about a dozen odd varieties on tap, of which we had consumed more than one…support your local publican and all that…

Let me just cut to the chase.

We have a new leader.

That’s right folks, it’s a big call but this is the best burger I have ever eaten!! I thought the Tasman Quartermaster’s efforts were going to be hard to beat, but this burger took the challenge to a whole new level!

Where TQ’s patty was an exercise in refined perfection, The Winston’s patty drops all pretences and simply screams, “Eat me mofo!!”

Chunky and perfectly cooked mince, crunchy exterior, tangy charcoal flavours permeating through from the grill marks…I hope I’m wrong but I really don’t think it can get any better than this!

Then you add the cheese, special sauce, fresh lettuce, sweet onions, awesome pickles that weren’t just there for decoration, and a delicious hunk of smoky bacon and you’ve got yourself a mouthful of absolute heaven!!

After our eyes finished rolling back in our heads, and we were once again capable of intelligible speech, we both agreed that the only teency-tiny improvement that could be made would be to increase the size of the bun. We both found it to be just a little bit narrow, resulting in a balancing act to ensure nothing squirted out the other side when taking a bite. But really, that’s being pretty pedantic…

Overall?

Go there. Now!!

I’ll say no more. It’s the best white collar burger in Hobart….so far.

  1. Friends went to the Winston some time back and tried something that can only be described as an uber burger, the type you get on the program Man v Food (which you should so watch if only to drool over the variety of burgers and true southern BBQ that man consumes); I understand it contained a doughnut and possibly maple syrup, along with the your usual burger contents and I think perhaps even a deep fried element, and heavens knows what else (I am sure this was a special item of the day). It sounded amazing to me (because I am a food whore) and initially my friends said they were enthusiastic too until they actually ate the concoction, which they concluded was actually pretty grim!

    1. I’ve seen some photos of that burger Cindy and I’m very interested in trying it! Maple syrup glazed bacon on a doughnut I think? Since hearing about it I’ve had a deep suspicion as to whether it would taste any good or not…and I suspect your friends are on the money! It’s still not going to stop me trying it though 😀

Absolutely love Man vs Food! I have no idea how he hasn’t yet succumbed to the mother of all heart attacks!

    1. Wow…very strange. Since I visited I’ve spoken to quite a number of people regarding their experiences at The Winston and it’s been pretty unanimous that their burgers are close to the best in Hobart, if not THE best. It’s obviously not an excuse for poor service or food, but you must have got them on a really bad day!

  2. Interesting! I thought the Winston had a good looking menu but hadn’t touched the burgers yet. Shall definitely have to try it.

Have you any plans to head to Jack Greene at the moment? My friend swears black and blue on the quality of their burgers whilst I was always more a fan of TQ’s wandering food hut so I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

    1. Oh, and I totally forgot to mention the newest contender on the block, Burger Haus. It’s just behind Marti Zuccos in North Hobart and I’m hearing friends rave about it for the past fortnight or so. With them out of the way you’d probably be pretty close to covering all the main contenders for White Collar Burger, I suspect.

      1. You’ve seriously got to try a Winston cheeseburger! It seems Rebecca (see above) had an issue with the patty, but lightning never strikes twice right? 🙂

Unfortunately Jack Greene is still on the ‘must visit’ list. I’m very keen to try them (and their beers!) given that burgers are their specialty. The other one I keep getting asked about is Devil’s Kitchen.

I actually visited Burger Haus last weekend. I finished processing the photos last night and hope to have the review up tonight, so stay tuned!!

As an aside, feel free to click the ‘Follow’ button up the top if you’re keen to get an email update whenever I add a new blog post 🙂

        Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Am going to the Winston tonight- was only going to try the buffalo wings but will put that cheeseburger on the menu now!!

      1. I had the cheeseburger with jalepenos, and while tasty the burger was slightly overcooked so not as juicy as it should have been. Still a damn fine burger though!

        1. That’s a shame about the patty… still, from what I’m hearing the quality is generally pretty good, so perhaps you just got them on a bad day.

    1. Only found your blog last night and I’m honestly loving it btw, I didn’t realise that there’s a few good burger joints here in Hobart. (thanks for the quick reply btw)
