Warm sunlight streaming through windows, the comforting notes of freshly baked cakes lingering in the air, and a coffee at my elbow. This is summertime on the eastern shore inside one of Hobart’s newest cafes, Abundance on the Quay.
However, to simply call it a cafe would be doing it a massive disservice. I could feel my oestrogen levels peaking as I slowly meandered my way amongst the shawls, candles, woven baskets and flower arrangements. Who knew there were so many shades of beige in this world? But in a good way! If it wasn’t for the camera in my hands I would have been sorely tempted to pull out the credit card and acquire a lush kaftan or two…
On the other hand, if it’s a light meal you’re craving then chances are you’ll find something to satisfy from the well-rounded menu; tarts, pate and toast, muffins, dips with sourdough…and last, but certainly not least, cakes! Full breakfasts aren’t yet available, but a little birdy tells me that this may change very soon.
The smoked salmon and brie toasted panini ($14.5) was a fantastic recommendation.
So often when brie is listed as an ingredient you literally need to go hunting under leaf and crumb with your magnifying glass in an attempt to find a sliver or two. Not so at Abundance, with chunky nuggets of the oozy, rich cheese liberally strewn throughout the toastie. The salmon too was top notch (not that I’ve ever had bad salmon in Tasmania!), working harmoniously with the brie in providing a rich and filling start to my morning.
Surprisingly, on the side was provided a very impressive little salad that punched far above its weight. The perfectly cooked asparagus was a unique, yet inspired accompaniment to the supremely fresh cherry tomatoes and greens. I can’t believe I’m going to use this description with a salad, but…yum!
Of course I couldn’t leave without trying a slice of the decadent salted caramel cheesecake that was seductively calling my name.
What can I say that can do it justice? Moreish biscuit base, full of crunch and nutty bite; delicate cheesecake and decadently sweet and salty caramel topping. Add a dollop or two of fresh cream and berries on the side and I was close to loosening the belt a notch!
Overall?
Budding homemakers will walk away inspired, hungry husbands satiated, and sweet tooths defeated!
Abundance on the Quay is a very welcome addition to the growing food scene on the ‘other’ side of the river (the better side if you ask me!). I’d like to say that I’d return for the new breakfast menu, but that would be a lie, because the first thing in my mouth would be another slice of cake!
If you’re out walking you’ll find them at 5 Clarence St, Bellerive, otherwise drop by their Facebook page here.
