Ask anyone who’s been to the Ross Bakery Inn what they’re famous for and I can guarantee that nine out of ten will tell you the same thing…the vanilla slice!
They themselves quite proudly proclaim that they have the ‘World’s Best Vanilla Slice’, and whether you believe them or not, you can’t deny that it’s pretty bloody good!
We knew lunch was only a couple of hours away, so we made sure didn’t fill up too much and only ordered a half size (or is it a third…?!) of the slice, together with an apple turnover.
Perfect start to the day!
I particularly enjoyed the apple turnover. As a child I always loved the mix of crumbly exterior and soft delicate pastry underneath, but most of all I loved the warm stewed apples hidden inside! Add a dollop of cream and I’m in heaven! It must have been 10 years or more since I had a freshly made turnover, and this one didn’t disappoint!
Whether it’s a large meal, or just a quick bite, anyone passing through Ross really should take the time to check this bakery out. They’ve been in operation for over 100 years and still use a genuine wood-fired brick oven to do all the cooking. Just crank it up to almost 370°C and get that bread rising!
If you’re keen to stay the night and spend a little more time exploring historic Ross, the Inn also offers a choice of four rooms in which you can rest your weary head. The olde-world charm of the sandstone Georgian house is guaranteed to please, and who can resist waking up to the smell of freshly baked sourdough rising up through the floor boards?!
I have to mention that there is actually a second bakery in town, but I haven’t yet stopped by to sample their wares.
If you’ve been, I’d be really interested to know how the two compare!
